Insider's Secrets for How to Write a Cookbook

Writing a Cookbook: Questions You MUST
Be Able to Answer Before You Start Writing

Before you put your fingers to the keyboard in writing a cookbook, you must have the answer to some very important questions.

First and foremost: Who's going to buy your cookbook? Who will make up the reader base for your cookbook?

This is so important in putting together a successful cookbook because before you can start writing you need to understand exactly who you are writing for.

Do not pass go until you have a very clearly defined idea of who your reader is.

"Everyone" is not the right answer. If only it were that simple. In any business you need to define your target market, and the more narrowly and specifically you can define it, the more likely it is that you will do well.

Anytime you want to be successful at selling anything (and, ultimately, you want your book to sell, right?), you need to have a very clear and specific idea of:

  • Who will buy it?

  • Who will want it?

  • Who will have need for it?

  • And  why?

This is called "targeting your market" or identifying your "target market".

You MUST to be able to answer the questions above with regards to your audience before (this can't be stressed enough) you start writing your cookbook. And you need to try to figure this out in as much detail as possible.

  • Will your  cookbook reader be primarily male, female, or both?

  • From what age group?

  • Will they be affluent, middle class, or lower income?

You must know the answer to exactly why people will need and want your cookbook. What benefits does it offer? What need does it meet that isn't already being met by other cookbooks out there? Why are people going to buy it? What will make this cookbook sell?

Determining who needs your cookbook and who will actually buy your cookbook are two very different matters. Just because someone has need for it doesn't mean they'll buy it. They have to recognize that they have then need. Your cookbook has to make the reader feel like she or he needs it. It has to fill needs, solve problems, and/or be brimming with benefits.

People buy cookbooks for one of two reasons:

1) because the cookbook appeals to their senses, or

2) because it solves their problems.

Appeal to the Cookbook Reader's Senses

A book that appeals to the reader's senses may have recipes that literally make reader's mouths water. Or it may have gorgeous photos that draw the reader in and capture their imagination. Or the cover may be beautiful.

Solve the Cookbook Reader's Problems

A cookbook that solves the reader's problems is a cookbook that offers solutions or benefits. A benefit offered by a cookbook could be that it provides a sense of adventure, fun, creative expression, or admiration (for instance, when entertaining guests). A cookbook that offers a solution could be one that saves the reader time (recipes that can be made in under 10 minutes, for instance) or that improves their health (heart-smart cooking, for instance).

Make sure you create the book to suit the target reader; to fit their wants, needs, preferences, budget, style, etc.

A good cookbook author knows she or he must also tailor the style of the book to the specific market being written for. For example, don't create a book of recipes for seniors with teeny, tiny 8-point type. Don't choose a baby-pink colored cover for a cookbook intended for single men!

Once you've developed a vividly clear picture of who you are writing for, always think about your target reader as you write.
